Hair Implantation Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

General Questions
QQ1. Immediately following the procedure will there be hair?
A: Implanted hair using the method of FUT will have a length of about 1.5 to 2.0cm whereas that using FUE will have a length of about 0.2 to 0.3cm.

Q2. Will the hair fall out again after implantation?
A: Implants are permanent; and, since the hair from the lower posterior region of the head is not impacted throughout life by male hormone hair loss, therefore, it will not again fall out.

Q3. Will the hair extraction site be noticeable?
A: Hair implantation using FUT will have suture marks at the extraction site, whereas that using FUE with a 0.8cm extraction pen will leave no trace.

Q4. For M-type baldness will the areas that have not had implants lose hair.
A: Hair loss prevention can first be done prior to male-type baldness treatment; in case male type baldness symptoms are already present natural hair-growth treatment should be combined.

Q5. The hair implantation procedure requires how much time?
A: The process of hair implants requires first the extraction of follicles to be implanted; and, then direct implant requires an implant area that will usually differ per individual. Generally the procedure time is according to the determined number of transplants but usually lasting from 3 to 5 hours.

Q6. About how long after implantation before normal hair commences growth?
A: For the implant area about 60~70% begins to fall out in 3 to 4 weeks but the follicle will remain firmly in place. The implant area will begin to grow hair in about 3 to 6 months; in principle, one year is the best scenario as at the start the new hair will appear fine and soft and gradually transform into the original hair texture.

Q7. How is the price for implants calculated?
A: Traditionally implant procedures are usually calculated on the basis of root units. The minimally invasive FUE method uses transplants as the base unit. For a normal person the ratio of roots to transplants is usually a multiple of 1.5 to 1.7. Basis root unit calculation for the total cost then the FUE method versus traditional implant procedures would be cheaper by 3~4%.

Before and After Procedure
Q1. Will there be pain during the procedure?
A: Prior to the procedure a local anesthetic will be administered so that there will be no pain at the site of the procedure and a state of alertness will be maintained throughout the entire procedure and completion of implanting.

Q2. When is it necessary to return to the clinic following the procedure?
A: The clinic implant team will arrange for the implant patient to return to the clinic each day for changing the dressing. For FUE patients the donor site will heal with each day and for FUT patient the stitches at the donor site can be removed after 10 days.

Q3. How should one sleep after the procedure?
A: One should sleep lying down with head on a pillow elevated at a 450 angle and pressure to the back of the head is not a concern.

Q4. What would be the best time to wash hair?
A: It is suggested to wait 5 days following the procedure to wash hair. The clinic provides the best care for dressing changing and cleaning after the procedure so as to prevent the moved follicles from falling out.

Q5. When can the scabbing be removed?
A: It must not be forcefully pulled off. Pulling the scab off when it is dry could especially result in scarring or the follicle falling off. Scabbing at the transplant area takes about 3 to 4 weeks to naturally fall off.

Q6. Will there be severe itching?
A: Some patients experience itching; do NOT scratch. Use only the post operational medicines of the clinic for protection.

Q7. Is there serious simultaneous hair loss?
There may be hair loss due to pressure applied during the procedure, circulatory changes to the back of the head or the transplanted hair going into a state of telogen effluvium (hair loss in follicle resting period).

Q8. Will there be vesicles at the area of transplant?
A: A minority of patients with oily scalps may develop pimple-like vesicles; or possibly during the procedure subcutaneous ingrown hairs or folliculitis may occur. All that is needed are periodic visits to the clinic and the post procedure physician will treat accordingly. After about 3 to 4 weeks the symptoms will naturally disappear.

Q9. After completion of the procedure why will the implanted area lose hair?
A: For the above situation this is considered temporary hair loss due to the follicle resting period occurring within 3 months after implantation; 3 months later firm and healthy hair will gradually grow out.

Q.10. Following implantation is post procedure care needed? What are the benefits of post procedure care?
A: In principle the 3 months following implantation are critical so we recommend periodic maintenance and scalp examination. Although implants are permanent however non-implant areas might experience alopecia due to hair loss factors. Periodic maintenance not only will take care of the implant section but also prevent hair loss elsewhere as well as permit us to more conveniently follow-up the post procedure condition; so, in this regard periodic maintenance is a necessity.

Q11. After implantation can consumption of health foods commence?
For 3 consecutive days following implantation anti-inflammatory pain relievers should be consumed. During the first week post procedure stimulants such as tobacco, liquor, chili peppers etc. are prohibited.

Q12. Will the removal of the stitches hurt? How long will scalp numbness continue?
A: For FUT (the traditional method used to cut out scalp transplants) during stitch removal very slight pricking pains will be felt but are within the scope of tolerability. As for localized scalp numbness, recovery will be within 5 to 6 months; it is due to transient paresthesia and not a cause for alarm.

Q13. When can the transplanted hair be cut or dyed?
A: At minimum there should be a 1 month wait following implantation before cutting, perming or dyeing hair due concern that the hair-stylist's scissor or other implements may injure the implant area. Therefore cutting, perming or dyeing hair must wait until at least 1 month post implantation.
